Calvin E. Watson

1926 – 2022

Calvin Watson lived a long, full life. He was 96 years old. To the many family members and loved ones who were lucky enough to hear them, his life became a treasured series of stories, full of wisdom and adventure, about boyhood fishing trips into the mountains, collecting rocks and arrowheads, and prospecting for uranium. He built houses and worked as a farmhand. He worked  on the railroad. And he served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, where he flew many missions from the SS Shamrock naval aircraft carrier. He built a long and successful career as a petroleum geologist, and he helped raise five children.

But always, his heart stayed like a boy’s, heading toward the Gallinas Canyon in the mountains near Las Vegas, New Mexico, where he was born. He had the timelessness of the hills and the hard honesty of a cold, clear, rushing mountain stream in his soul.

He was an honorable man.
