Bobby Joe Hester (Bob)


Bobby Joe Hester (Bob) born January 18, 1925 in Blanchard Oklahoma passed into the waiting arms of Jesus on January 15, 2023 at his home in Edmond Oklahoma. Bob attended school in Blanchard Oklahoma graduating Highschool in 1943. Following WWII Bob attended the University of Oklahoma for two years then Draughon School of Business in Oklahoma City where he received a degree in accounting.

Immediately following his Highschool graduation, Bob served in the US Army Air Corps 312th Bomb Group as an aerial gunner in an A-20 Attack Bomber from July 1943 – March 1946.  Bob achieved the ranks of Sergeant during combat followed by Staff Sergeant post war. He received the Pacific Theatre Bronze Star and Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

Following the war, Bob worked as an Oil & Gas Accountant for Harper Turner Oil Company and Big Chief Drilling Company both based in Oklahoma City. In 1969 Bob realized a dream of owning his own restaurant when he purchased the Smoke House Bar-B-Q restaurant on NW 10th Steet in Oklahoma City. In 1981 Bob successfully moved the restaurant from downtown Oklahoma City to the Northwest side at the Penn Hefner Plaza. He later sold the restaurant and took an executive position with Woods Petroleum in Oklahoma City where he worked as an assistant to the President and coordinated both domestic and foreign drilling programs including Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming and Brunei in Southeast Asia.

Bob is a long-time member of Crossings Community Church where he served in the food ministry as well as ushering. Bob also served as a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts of America for many years and later served as Administrative Coordinator for five summer camps with the BSA Last Frontier Council.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents H. Jeff Hester and Evelyn Hester of Blanchard, wife Lu Anne Hester, former wife Jeane Hester and Son Jeff Janes. Bob is survived by wife Nancy Custer Hester of Edmond, Son Steven Hester and wife Fern of San Marcos Texas, Son Gregg Janes and wife Lisa of Edmond, Son Robert Custer II and wife Deana, of Dallas, Daughter Kelley Allen and husband Brent of Edmond, Daughter Carla Nikkel and husband Mark of Edmond, and five Granddaughters, Grandchildren Brandon Janes and wife Megan of Edmond, Olivia Means and husband Eric of Edmond, Mechell Janes of Oklahoma City and five Great Grandchildren.

As a proud member of our Greatest Generation, Bob lived his life to the fullest always keeping the priorities of God, Family, Friends and Country at the forefront of everything he did. His warm and gregarious smile will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City, OK.
