1928 – 2019
Betty Witt Dunn Gilbert was born on Sunday, October l4, l928 in St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Eugenia Belle Coulter Witt and Sidney Mayo Witt. She died on December 3, 2019.
Betty is survived by her loving husband, George Gilbert (“George”), her son, George Harvey Dunn III, and his wife, Sandra Hengst Dunn of Loveland, Co. and her daughter, Sally Eugenia Dunn McGuffey of Austin. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren: Amanda Michelle Dunn Stellick and her husband, Caleb, Megan Elizabeth Dunn Kent and her husband, Stephen, William Harvey Dunn and his wife Lauren (Loescher), Kaitlin Kelly Dunn, Kyle Steven McGuffey, and Joshua Mark Dunn, and nine great grandchildren: Aurora, Liam, Elena and Kiara Dunn, Evelyn and Samuel Kent, and Oliver, Bonnie and Jack Stellick. Also, her sister- in law, Dorothy Drake Dunn and her brother-in-law, Jerry Dunn and wife, Barbara, and nephew Lawrence Alan Witt, his wife, Barbara and daughter, Sarah, as well as other nephews and nieces.
Betty was predeceased by her first husband, George Harvey Dunn Jr. (“Harvey”), her mother and father, her brother, Sidney Mayo Witt, Jr., her sister-in-law, Mary Lawrence Witt, and her nephew, Sidney Mayo Witt III, her granddaughter, Ann Elise McGuffey, and son-in-law, Thomas David McGuffey, as well as Harvey’s parents, Ione Walton Dunn and George Harvey Dunn (Sr.), William W. Dunn and Beverly Dunn.
Betty was baptized and a member of the First Methodist Church in Tulsa. She attended Lee Elementary, Horace Mann Jr. High School and graduated from Central High School in l946. She had the privilege of attending the prestigious Ward Belmont Girls Junior College (now Belmont University) in Nashville, Tenn., where she was chosen for Phi Theta Kappa. She graduated from The University of Tulsa where she was Treasurer of Chi Omega Fraternity and chosen for Who’s Who in American Colleges & Universities.
On April l9, l952, Betty married Harvey in the First Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. They met at Stanolind Oil and Gas in Tulsa. They subsequently moved to Corpus Christi where they were members of The First Presbyterian Church and in l956, after moving to Houston, they became members of Memorial Drive Presbyterian where Betty was one of the first Circle Chairmen. She and Harvey were also involved in starting Pines Presbyterian Church.
Later, Betty and Harvey moved to Odessa, Texas, where they became active members in the First Presbyterian Church. Betty was President of the Women of the Church as well as active in many social and charity organizations including President of The Women of Odessa Country Club and President of Odessa Panhellenic. While in Odessa, she was chosen for Who’s Who in Texas.
In 1977, Harvey and Betty moved back to Houston and rejoined Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. They established a second home in April Sound near Montgomery, Texas, where they enjoyed golf and boating with their friends and family for twenty years. In Conroe, Betty became a member of The Assistance League of Lake Conroe Area and President of the April Sound Ladies Association.
In l998, Harvey and Betty retired to Sun City in Georgetown, Texas, and joined The First Presbyterian of Georgetown and helped organize San Gabriel Presbyterian Church. She was a member of The Assistance League of Georgetown Area, the D.A.R. and the Junior League Tearoom of Houston, as well as other clubs in Sun City. Betty later became a member of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin. Harvey passed away in 2012, just after Betty and Harvey celebrated (a couple of months early) their 60th wedding anniversary.
In 2013, Betty married her first love, George, to whom she was first engaged in the spring of 1950. She liked to say: “I’ve been married to two men in my life, both of whom asked for and received permission from my father to marry me.” George and Betty lived in Oklahoma City at Epworth Villa until she passed with George at her side.
