Becky Darlene (Maxwell) Gammill was born July 30, 1953, in Ponca City to Jim and Frances (Waddell) Maxwell, and she grew up in Ponca City. She graduated from Ponca City High School in 1971. Her brother, Wilbur Maxwell, introduced her to her eventual husband, Don Gammill, while they were still in grade school. The couple dated throughout high school, at one point paying rent on two apartments yet living together in secret while Don attended the University of Central Oklahoma. They were married Jan. 27, 1974, and soon after moved to Enid, Okla. They adopted a son, Bryan Gammill, on June 6, 1978.
Mrs. Gammill and her family lived in Enid until 1986 when they settled for good in Edmond, where she worked as a homemaker. She also babysat children for years, working as a nursery director at First United Methodist. Her hobbies included playing cards, watching cooking shows on television and hosting dinners with friends and family, and she will be missed for her sweet smile and positive attitude—even in the wake of fighting multiple health issues. At one point when she came out of an induced coma, her first words were cheerful, her son said. “My mom showed unconditional love to everyone she knew,” he said, “and I think she will be most remembered for that love.”
She is survived by her son and his wife, Kristy. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Sydney Gammill; Anna Linn; Caleb Linn, and Liam Gammill. She is survived by two great-grandchildren, Madden Lake and Emilia Lake, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her younger sister, Kathy Maxwell Womack; her younger brother, Wilbur Maxwell; and her parents.
