Barbara passed away Tuesday, March 6 in Oklahoma City surrounded by her family and those who loved and cared for her during her long hospital stay.

Barbara was born September 24, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri to Harold and Lorene Dahlstrom. She graduated from Ottawa High School in Ottawa, Kansas before attending Central Missouri State in Warrensburg, Missouri. She married John Jay Breithaupt in 1961 in Ottawa, Kansas.

Barbara’s career was her family as her focus and heart were always with them. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. One of her talents was working with colors and textures in decorating. Her favorite hobby was gardening. A Master Gardener, she felt closest to God while working in the beautiful garden she created and tended. A sign in her garden reads “The kiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for mirth, you are never nearer Gods heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth.”

She had a beautiful smile she always shared with others and that smile epitomized on of her favorite songs from her childhood, “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam.” She truly was a sunbeam in her family’s lives.

The family would like to offer special thank you to the Select Specialty Hospital ICU team that cared for her with kindness, compassion and love throughout her long struggle to heal.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jay of Edmond, Oklahoma; her daughter, Jodie Hoover and husband Clark of Olathe, Kansas; her son, Bart Breithaupt, of Edmond, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Justin Hoover and wife Jess of Olathe, Kansas; Ashley Farr and husband Dave of Linwood, Kansas; Jackson Breithaupt of Edmond, Oklahoma; and two great-grandchildren Barrett Hoover and Owen Farr.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Edmond, Oklahoma (305 E. Hurd). Barbara asked that those attending to wear bright clothing. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the YWCA Inez Kinney Gaylord Emergency Shelter for Women and Children C/O YWCA of Oklahoma City, 2460 NW 39th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73112, Phone 405-948-1770.
