Anita June Neighbours Sullivan
1942 – 2023
Anita June (Neighbours) Sullivan was born June 25th, 1942, at Ft. Sill Army Post in Oklahoma to Edith LuElla (Wilbanks) Neighbours and Clarence David Neighbours. She died peacefully on September 20, 2023, in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Anita was born during WW II at a time that her father was training soldiers at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma. Her first few years of life were spent growing up in Edmond, Oklahoma where she and her mother lived with family while Sgt. Neighbours was overseas. Some of her earliest memories included walks to the local post office for letters from her daddy, but also initially only knowing him from pictures.
After the war, the Neighbours settled in the Oklahoma City area where her mother was a teacher for many decades and her father was in the dry-cleaning business in Oklahoma City, then later Edmond.
Although she was an only child, Anita grew up with a large and close extended family of Neighbors, Wilbanks and others in the area. She deeply loved her aunts, uncles, cousins and enjoyed family reunions and staying connected.
Anita grew up knowing the loving embrace of family and God. She was blessed with musical talent and a love of music. As a child, she loved to play the piano, sing and perform. She was involved in many various stage productions throughout her life and embraced this passion to the very end.
Anita graduated from Northeast High School and attended Central State College in Edmond where she met her first husband (Timothy Holmes). Anita became the loving mother to Donna and Rex.
As a single mother, Anita embarked upon a career as a paralegal. She worked for the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts and later as a freelance paralegal for many of the attorneys she knew in the community.
In the mid 70’s she met and fell in love with John C. Sullivan. They were married in 1978 and continued to reside in Edmond where they made a home as loving parents and grandparents for the next 45 years.
Over the years, Anita and John were members of several church communities in Edmond with Chisholm Creek Baptist being their final church home.
In retirement, Anita was active with the Golden Harmonizers Choir at the Edmond Senior Center and enjoyed her “Red Hat Ladies”. She also loved to keep up with what everyone was up to in her large circle of family and friends and to dote over her dachshund “Nicky”.
Some of her favorite memories in life included recording a gospel record with a select choir from Oklahoma churches, the production of annual Christmas music tapes with the grandkids (she loved being the “director”), family gatherings and just acting plain silly on occasions. Oh….and the musical “The Sound of Music”.
Anita June Sullivan is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, grandson Kyle Price, and many beloved extended family members. She is survived by her husband John Sullivan, daughter Donna Price (Phillip), son Rex Holmes (Judith), grandchildren Christopher Holmes (Emily), Zachary Price (Kamaria), Chelsea Holmes (Alexa Berg), Ashley Price (Tom Wilton), great-grandson Zavier Price and a soon-to-be-born great-grandson. She is also survived by many cousins and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, October 13, 2023 beginning at 10:00 AM at Chisholm Creek Baptist Church, 17600 N Western Ave, Edmond, OK 73012.
A lot of memories with the Oklahoma cousins… many summers coming to our farm to visit. Sad for the loss of cousin Anita June. I will miss her texts that we have shared the past couple of years.
She was an amazing person and an excellent Mother.
I enjoyed talking to her at family meetings.
