Alma “Gladys” Myers
Alma Gladys Myers was born in Cord, Arkansas on January 3, 1926 to James William and Altha Susan (Hensley) Bullington. She died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 10, 2019. The youngest of six children, Gladys grew up in Konowa in Seminole County, Ok. In 1943, she married Udell Doyle. This marriage produced one daughter, Cheryl. Gladys was widowed in 1944, age 19, a few days after Cheryl’s birth. In 1950, Gladys married Fred B. Myers, Jr. and this union lasted 56 years until his death in 2006. Together they had three children, Steven, Laurie and Andy.
Gladys had an enduring faith in God and was a life-long follower of Jesus. She possessed an uncommon inner strength and stubbornness, no doubt necessary survival skills for living among 5 older siblings in the uncertainty and poverty of the 1930s Oklahoma dust bowl. She was a skilled homemaker and independent thinker, returning to college in middle age to complete a bachelors degree in secondary education. At 50 she earned a masters degree in business education. Gladys taught home economics and business in the Oklahoma City and Mid-Del Public School Districts and later worked at the Oklahoma Office of Personnel Management.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters, husbands, Udell Doyle and Fred Myers. She is survived by daughter Cheryl Hearne; son, Steve Myers and wife Julie; daughter, Laurie Brewer; son, Andy Myers and wife, Elizabeth. She is also survived by grandchildren Brad O’Hearne, Christy Oakes, Amy Graziano, Chris and Matt Brewer, Kelly and Todd Myers. Gladys was the proud great-grandmother of 15.
