Alice Mae Musser

Alice Mae Musser

1929-2024

Former state Rep. and Oklahoma City Community College Regent Alice Mae Musser went home to Jesus on Dec. 3, 2024, following a short illness. She had just celebrated Thanksgiving and her 95th birthday surrounded by family members.

Alice led a life of sacrifice for her family and her community. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she also was an outspoken advocate for women and seniors.

A die-hard Democrat, Alice in 1982 won a hard-fought election to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where she championed the causes of public education and people in need. Among her achievements, she authored a law that helps lower income, elderly, and disabled homeowners to weatherize their homes and save on energy costs.

Her dedication to public education continued with her appointment to the Oklahoma City Community College Board of Regents. From 2003-2010, Alice served as secretary, clerk, chair, and president of the board.

She had two successful 20-year marriages, first to the Rev. Don Mecoy, who died in 1972, and then to Carl Musser, whom she married in 1974. Out of the tragedy of losing their spouses early in their lives, Carl and Alice successfully melded two families of teens: her four children and his two children. She became a single parent when Carl died in 1993.

Alice was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in the small town of Marietta. In 1947, she graduated from Marietta High School as the class’s valedictorian.

She enrolled at the University of Oklahoma and was well on her way to earning a bachelor’s degree when she met a church pastor named Don Mecoy.

After their marriage, Alice fulfilled her responsibilities as a preacher’s wife, was a lead soprano in the church choir and worked in various positions, including at the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and Cox Cable, where she rose quickly through the ranks to become the company’s personnel manager. She also worked at the Oklahoma Tax Commission and served as the Domestic Violence Coordinator for the Oklahoma City Metro Alliance for Safer Cities.

She was active in local politics, serving as a delegate to the 1992 National Democratic convention and the White House Conference on Aging, as an Oklahoma County Senior Nutrition Program Development Foundation board member and a senator in the Oklahoma Silver Haired Legislature. She was also active in her church community, serving as an elder, board chair, trustee and in other positions at Capitol Hill Christian Church.

Alice is survived by four of her children, Bob, Laura, Fred and Don, her stepson Dennis, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Christian Church of Edmond, P.O. Box 3548, Edmond, OK 73083.

Interment will be held Friday, December 6, 2024, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 1802 S 10th St, Chickasha, OK 73018. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church, 201 E. Second St., Edmond, OK 73034.
