Kelsey Louise (Scoggins) Kennedy

Kelsey L. Kennedy

1978-2014

Kennedy, Kelsey obit picKelsey Louise (Scoggins) Kennedy was born to Eddy and Marilyn Scoggins on November 21, 1978, in Amarillo, Texas. She stepped into a cancer-free eternity with Jesus Christ on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City after a 15-month battle with epithelioid sarcoma. Her life was a wonderful reflection of her love for Jesus. She had the ability to make anyone she spoke with feel welcomed and respected. Her vitality, humor and love for life were a joy to all.

Kelsey made a decision to follow Christ in seventh grade and, in high school, reaffirmed her commitment to follow her Savior wherever He would lead. She graduated from Hooker High School in 1997, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Oklahoma Baptist University in 2001, and received a Master of Arts Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from The University of Oklahoma in 2003.

Her heart for missions was evidenced by her involvement in youth trips in her younger years and more recently a summer mission trip to Beirut, Lebanon, in 2004. On March 4, 2006, she married Chris Kennedy in Norman, Okla. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Alexa Hope. Kelsey kept the Kennedy household running smoothly as she chose to stay at home, worked at Trinity Baptist Church and actively participated in Bible Study Fellowship.

She was a dedicated wife, caring mother, and special friend. She had a love of sports, enjoying running and cycling. As a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norman, she mentored younger women and helped lead small groups.

She was preceded in death by two miscarried children. Survivors include her husband Chris and daughter Alexa; her parents Eddy and Marilyn Scoggins of Coppell, Texas; parents-in-law, Charlie and Karen Kennedy of Redding, Calif.; sister, Holly Moore and her husband Mark of Edmond, Okla.; niece and nephew, Rylen and Layton Moore.

Kelsey’s celebration service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2014, at Edmond First Baptist Church, 1300 E 33rd Street in Edmond, Okla., with Pastor Blake Gideon officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to help with ongoing integrative cancer research may be given online at www.reo-foundation.org.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, July 10, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home at 601 S. Kelly in Edmond, OK.

I didn’t start reading Kelsey’s blog until she found out she had cancer. From then on I was captivated by her willingness to share her faith in her loving God, her hope that she was going to be healed; but she was also willing to share the human side of her…the wondering why, the discouragement at times, the pain she endured…her real emotions. Most people aren’t that open, but it was such an inspiration to me to pray for her all the more. So thankful for the past year of praying for Kelsey, Chris, and Alexa. Kelsey lost the battle of cancer but gained the victory of Heaven!

Dear Chris, Alexa, and all of Kelsey’s family: Doug and I want you to know we have been praying for all of you through all of this. We will continue to keep you in our prayers. We knew Kelsey through our son Eric. We remember her as a bright and outgoing Christian gal. She just glowed with the love of our Lord. When we first attended Trinity with Eric she was one of the first people to come and greet us after the service. This left a lasting impression with us. We thank The Lord that Kelsey is now cancer free and with the Jesus she loved so. We grieve with those of you that are left behind. We know that it will be difficult to carry on without her. We pray that each of you will find strength and peace in the arms of our Lord.

So beautifully written…I too am praying for the Scoggins and Kennedy families. Kelsey was so special…anyone who knew her, knew that. She had such a beautiful spirit and caring heart. God’s love lit up Kelsey and her love for others. I always enjoyed being around her and I loved her outlook on life…. I am inspired by her writings on the blog as well as yours Chris and my heart is so moved at the intimate way you guys have included all your family and friends to accompany you on this journey. I’m not sure you will ever know the magnitude of people that have truly be touched through this experience. God is good and so powerful…I pray that He will continue to use this experience to bring others to know Him. I will continue to lift you up in prayer and give God the glory for the things He has done, and for the things He is about to do. May your heart find peace as you think about your wonderful memories of Kelsey.

Love and prayers to you all…

I am so sorry for your loss and am sending up many prayers for your families! We all have great memories of Kelsey as well as other members of your family and do pray you will feel comfort as we uplift all of you! Please give that sweet Alexa a big hug and kiss for me she is such a little darling and you can tell she has many of her Mom’s actions! Kelsey’s blogs meant so much to each one of us, as well as Chris’s also, it sure gave a person many things to be thankful for every day when we wake up and can be healthy, we take so many things for granted!

Love to all of you, God be with each one of you! Praying for comfort and strength for each one of you!

What an honor it has been to pray with you during this journey. Thank you for your transparency in this journey. The impact of your testimony has changed eternity forever. Chris, we love you, Alexa, Marilyn, Eddie and Holly. Kelsey was such a blessing to us. Our hearts are heavy with grief over this separation. But we rest in the fact that Kelsey is with our Lord. She is happy, healthy and at peace. God is good, even though we do not understand the why’s of all of this , we know He lives! And because He lives so does our beautiful Kelsey. Prayers, love and blessings to you.

  24. Denese (Loban) Sorna

Although I never had the honor of meeting Kelsey while she was here on this earth, I certainly look forward to meeting her in Heaven. The words spoken in remembrance of her by her family and friends testify of her great capacity for love and of her being a shining light for her Lord and Savior. What a wonderful legacy of love and goodness she is leaving.

There are no words to speak to ease the pain or fill the gap of the loss of this precious wife, Mother, daughter. I pray that the Holy Spirit, the comforter, will surround you, fill you and carry you through. I have awakened many times in the night to lift you all up in prayer, and I will continue to do so.
    Love and prayers,
    Denese (Loban) Sorna

Kelsey’s sweet spirit has touched us all so deeply. Following her blog has been an inspiration and a witness of her love for our Lord and Savior. I love you all and my heart aches for each one of you. She always had a big smile and a love of life that was contagious to anyone she met. My heart is with you today even though I’m not there. May our Lord of Lords and King of Kings give you the wonderful peace that passes all understanding as only He can. You have been in my thoughts and prayers and will continue to be. Love, prayers and hugs to you all.

  26. Richard Parke

    Dear Chris and Alexa Hope,

Especially you are in my prayers today, July 11, 2014, as you participate in the funeral service in Edmonds, Oklahoma, to honor, remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Kelsey and as you are surrounded even at this very moment by family and friends, including my nephew John Chase and his wife Kelly Kennedy Chase of Rockville, MD.

May the peace of God, that surpasses and transcends all [human] understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

    Uncle Richard

We learned of this not too long ago and we are heart-broken for your family. Although we didn’t know Kelsey well, we know Eddy and Marilyn. From reading the obituary and what others wrote, we see what a wonderful young Christian woman she was. Heaven gets dearer and dearer as those we love go on to live with Him. We are grateful for the testimony of her life and how it encourages us to live well and reflect Jesus on this earth. Praying for your family…Gary and Toni Jackson
